Speech Therapy

Our speech therapy staff (more commonly known as speech and language therapists) are specially trained to work with patients who have delays or disorders in human communication. At Queen of Peace, our speech and language therapist is involved in the assessment of people with a communication problem, and the provision of therapy.

Since communication problems have many causes, our therapists have vast knowledge of how human linguistic communication works and how it can fail.

DISORDERS
Common disorders in patients seen by speech and language therapists include:

• Aphasia (problems in language construction or decoding)
• Dyspraxia (problems in control of the vocal apparatus)
• Dysfluency (problems with the fluency of pronunciation, i.e., stuttering)
• Dysphonia (problems with the generation of voice in the larynx)
• Dyslexia (problems with reading).

Common causes of communication disorders include head injury, hearing loss, and stroke; however, a number of these causes seem to have a genetic component.
