Therapy
Queen of Peace Hospital offers massage therapy at both The Fitness
Center and at the Hospital through the Oncology Support Center.
This multi-faceted complementary therapy program offers patients
pain relief through therapeutic massage. Massage therapy is
just the first step the Hospital is taking to build a complementary
therapy program for patients.
Massage therapy is systematic manipulation of the body's soft
tissue by such movements as rubbing, kneading, pressing, rolling,
and tapping. The purpose of this therapy is to promote circulation
of the blood and lymph, relaxation of muscles, relief of pain,
and other physical and mental benefits.
CONDITIONS THAT BENEFIT FROM MASSAGE
Individuals who have the following symptoms or diseases can
benefit from massage:
• anxiety • arthritis
• back pain • carpal tunnel syndrome
• chronic fatigue syndrome • chronic pain
• depression • diabetes • fibromyalgia
• headaches • insomnia • recent
trauma and/or injury
• stress.
MASSAGE TECHNIQUES
Healing massage techniques are the focus at the Hospital and
include:
• Swedish massage
(The application of touch by one person to another, using manual
techniques of rubbing, stroking, kneading, or compression. This
type of massage uses a combination of active and passive movements
of the joints.)
• Deep tissue massage
(Slow strokes and deep finger pressure on contracted areas.
Also focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue.)
• Trigger point therapy
(Applying concentrated finger pressure to trigger points
painful, irritated areas in muscles to break cycles
of spasm and pain.)
• Sports massage
(Massage therapy focusing on muscle systems relevant to a particular
sport.)
