Queen of Peace Monitors H1N1 Novel Influenza ("Swine Flu") Outbreak
(NEW PRAGUE, MN - April 30, 2009) – Hospitals across the nation, including Queen of Peace, are concerned about an outbreak of H1N1 Novel Influenza, also called "swine flu," and specifically its appearance in Minnesota.
(Updated 8/11/09: Le Sueur County Public Health officials are working with local health care providers, including hospitals and clinics and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), to investigate a cluster of influenza-like illnesses in workers at a food processing plant in Montgomery, Minnesota. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are issuing frequent updates and notifications regarding the evolving situation, and Queen of Peace is monitoring the situation closely.
Viruses are mainly spread from person to person through coughing or sneezing. There are some very simple and practical steps you can take to protect yourself from infectious diseases like influenza.
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after you use it.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Avoid direct contact with sick people or people who are exhibiting symptoms.
- If you feel sick or begin to show symptoms of influenza, please stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from spreading infection.
The CDC has also recommended that U.S. travelers avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico.
