Occupational
Therapy
Our occupational therapist helps people
with physical, cognitive, sensory, motor, and/or psychological
disabilities master the skills needed for self-care, work and
play. This type of therapy helps people with disabilities
to fulfill their roles and responsibilities as spouse, parent,
worker, and/or student. Therapeutic methods, applied and
assistive technology, and environmental modifications are used.
EXAMPLES
The "occupation" in occupational therapy refers to
the activities and tasks that we do everyday:
• preparing meals
• getting ready for work
• driving to school or work
• performing our job duties
• using the telephone or computer
• eating
• doing the laundry
• paying bills
• grocery shopping
• cleaning house
• visiting friends
• taking care of family members
• participating in hobbies
• playing sports
• taking care of our pets
BENEFITS
This is a list of diagnoses that may be seen by our occupational
therapist. (this list is NOT all-inclusive.) It is meant
to show that this type of therapy is available and beneficial
to many individuals:
• developmental disorders (ADHD, cerebral palsy, mental
retardation, autism)
• sensory disorders (blindness, chronic pain, sensory
loss)
• injuries (of the head, back, arms, and spinal cord,
carpal tunnel syndrome, aneurysm)
• musculoskeletal Disorders (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid
arthritis, osteoporosis)
• systemic disorders (diabetes, kidney disease with dialysis)
• immunological disorders (AIDS, cancer)
• skin disorders or injuries (burns)
• cognitive disorders (Alzheimer's Disease, dementia)
• mental health disorders (depression, substance abuse/dependence).
